There are proven solutions to improve waste management practices that will reduce emissions from the sector and lead to cleaner, more sustainable cities. The Climate and Clean Air Coalition’s Municipal Solid Waste Initiative works with a network of cities around the world to advance waste sector mitigation practices in three key areas: Organic Waste Diversion: Minimizing the food waste sent to landfills to reduce methane generation and to avoid significant costs incurred by developing or expanding landfills to accommodate excess waste; Landfill Gas Capture and Use: Capturing landfill gas to prevent methane from entering the atmosphere and contributing to local smog and global climate change; Open Waste Burning Prevention: Promoting alternatives to open burning to reduce black carbon emissions and to prevent the release of cancer-causing compounds and other toxic substances. |

- Reduce by 10% the amount of untreated organics being disposed in landfills in cities participating in CCAC MSWI by 2025.
- Eliminate open burning in all the cities participating in CCAC MSWI by 2025
- By December 2015, 50 cities globally will commit to develop and implement quantifiable plans of action to reduce SLCPs from the waste sector by 2020, with support from national and partner city governments;
- By December 2020, expand the global city network to reach an additional 100 cities to build capacity and utilize the networks tools and resources to mainstream SLCP-considerations in waste management practices;
- The initial 150 cities that join the initiative by 2020 will motivate and lead to up to 1,000 cities undertaking action by communicating, sharing, disseminating, mentoring, and scaling around the world their own successful best practices, supported by partners. |
