After Hurricane Stan (October 2005), which affected greatly this area, several analysis took place regarding the impacts it had on the coastal and border region of the state of Chiapas, showing the need of adaptive measures (https://www.iucn.org/node/989). The project builds on several initiatives in the last 15 years. The most recent actions focused on forest restoration to enhance the recovery of vegetation and water infiltration and reduce soil erosion due to surface runoff, thus reducing the possibility of overflow and floods in the basin and elevating its socio-environmental resilience. https://www.iucn.org/node/29651
